Apochromate sind Refraktoren, deren Linsendesign so ausgelegt ist, dass mindestens drei Farben in einem gemeinsamen Brennpunkt vereint werden. So wird der Farbfehler unterdrückt, der für Linsenfernrohre typisch ist. Ohne diese Korrektur haben helle Objekte wie der Mond oder die Planeten störende Farbsäume.

Refraktoren sind Teleskope, deren Objektiv aus einer oder mehreren Glaslinsen besteht. Die Linse bricht das Licht in einem Brennpunkt. Die genaue Lage des Brennpunkts ist allerdings von der Wellenlänge (Farbe) des Lichts abhängig. So kommt es zu einem Farbfehler, der sich als farbiger Saum um helle Objekte bemerkbar macht. In der Physik bezeichnet man diese Abhängigkeit der Brechung von der Wellenlänge als Dispersion.
Es gibt keine wirklich scharfe Definition des Begriffs Apochromat. Die meisten Apochromate verfügen über Objektive aus zwei Linsen, bei denen ein Spezialglas zum Einsatz kommt. Dieses sogenannte ED-Glas verfügt über eine besonders niedrige Dispersion (die Abkürzung ED steht für Extra low Dispersion). Die ED-Apochromate liefern ein weitestgehend farbreines Bild.
Für eine noch schärfere Abbildung sorgen Objektive aus drei oder vier Linsen. Diese Apochromate werden entsprechend Triplet oder Quadruplet genannt. Sie können es in Sachen Farbreinheit mit einer Spiegeloptik aufnehmen.
